Dr. Mifta ul Shafiq is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at Cluster University Srinagar. His academic and research interests broadly encompass Climatology, Geomorphology, Cryosphere Studies, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Land Use/Land Cover Change, and Climate and Hydrological Modelling. His research focuses particularly on understanding climate variability and its implications for the Himalayan environment, with emphasis on glacier and snow dynamics, climate-induced environmental changes, disaster risk, and geospatial assessment of natural hazards. His work integrates remote sensing, GIS, satellite observations, statistical techniques, and environmental modelling to investigate spatial and temporal patterns of environmental change in the Kashmir Himalaya. Dr. Shafiq has contributed extensively to research on glacier dynamics, snow cover variability, land use/land cover transformation, climate trends, land surface temperature, and climate-related hazards, including Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), landslides, floods, and other hydro-meteorological hazards. His current research interests also include climate change impacts, disaster risk reduction, geospatial modelling, climate-resilient land management, and environmental sustainability in the Himalayan region. He has published more than 35 research papers in scholarly journals and has received more than 1,050 citations for his research contributions. He has also been the recipient of several academic distinctions and fellowships, including the UGC-NET Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), a Gold Medal from the University of Kashmir for securing first rank in M.Sc. Geography, a PG Merit Scholarship for securing first rank in the University of Kashmir entrance examination, and the prestigious UGC D. S. Kothari Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Dr. Shafiq is actively engaged in teaching, research, curriculum development, academic administration, and the promotion of geospatial and climate research. He is particularly interested in strengthening advanced GIS and Remote Sensing applications in geographical research and developing a dedicated Climate Research and Simulation Laboratory to support interdisciplinary research and student training.
